Breeding dogs

Different dogs look, act and bark in different ways, depending on their breed.


Boxer. This working dog has a smooth coat and upright ears and is a smart and loyal dog.


Saint Bernard. This large working dog has a big head, strong neck, and broad shoulders and back.


Collie. The rough-coated collie, shown here, is a popular herding dog with long, straight hair.


Dachshund. This little hound has short legs and a long body, which allows it to chase badgers underground.


Beagle. This little hound has a smooth coat and can track animals by smell.


Dalmatian. This nonsporting dog is white with dark spots, and is considered the mascot of firefighters.


Pug. This toy dog has a short, compact body and a big, wrinkly head.


Poodle. The standard poodle, shown here, has thick curly fur that is often clipped into puffy balls.


Chihuahua. This toy dog has big eyes and can have either a smooth or long-haired coat.


Bulldog. This nonsporting dog has a big head and is considered the mascot of England.


Rottweiler. This working dog has short, black fur and a short tail.


Basset Hound. This hound has big, droopy ears and a great sense of smell.


Labrador Retriever. This popular sporting dog has a thick, waterproof coat and a thick tail.


Welsh Corgi. This smart little herding dog makes a loving pet.


Golden Retriever. This popular sporting dog has a thick, waterproof coat and loves to swim.


German Shepherd Dog. This big herding dog is known for its loyalty and bravery, and is often used as a police dog.


Old English Sheepdog. This furry herding doghas a long gray or white hair that gets so shaggy that it can hide the dog’s eyes.


Great Dane. This very large working dog has a smooth, glossy coat of short, thick hair and strong, muscular legs.


Doberman Pinscher. This working dog has a smooth, dark-colored coat and is often used as a guard dog or police dog.
